The Perekryostok retail chain, together with one of the largest pet food manufacturers and EcoTechnologies, is launching a pilot project to collect pet food packaging. Three supermarkets in Moscow have installed "smart" bins where anyone can recycle used pet food packaging. The initiative is implemented in accordance with the goals of the X5 Group’s sustainable development strategy, in particular, in the direction of "responsible consumption and production".
The main feature of the "smart" boxes is the presence of a compression mechanism that reduces the total volume of the contents as the bin fills up, increasing the capacity of the tank to 120 liters.
Any amount of packaging can be recycled, the main condition being that it must be cleaned beforehand. In addition to food spiders, doy packs of baby food, sauces and cosmetics can be placed in the bin.

"We continue to actively develop environmental initiatives that are an integral part of the company's sustainability strategy. Launching a pilot project to collect pet food packaging is an important step in reducing waste. By supporting our customers in their commitment to the environment, we support the planet. This is our main principle of interaction with our customers - "Everything for you! And for you", — commented Snezhana Chernogortseva, Director of Strategic Marketing and Customer Experience at Perekryostok retail chain.

"Pauches refer to soft multi-layer packaging, which is difficult to recycle due to the fact that it consists of several layers of different materials. As part of a pauch there is polyethylene and foil, which need to be separated, so such packaging is not massively collected for recycling. But within the framework of the new campaign in Perekryostok, the pauches will get a second life: they will be crushed and added to the polymer-sand composite, which is used to make, for example, benches ," — said Natalia Ponomaryova, head of environmental projects at EcoTechnologies.
In many supermarkets of the trade network in different regions there are already installed fandomats for collection of plastic and aluminum containers, garbage cans for collection of batteries, toothbrushes and lids, as well as points of acceptance of book products, textiles, clothes and leather goods. According to the company’s internal data, in the first half of 2024 alone, Perekryostok supermarkets collected for recycling about 19 tons of batteries, 7 tons of plastic caps, 2 tons of aerosol cans, more than 24.5 thousand unwanted books and 550 kg of toothbrushes.
